EXT.BACKYARD - AFTERNOON

DUDEMAN and his girlfriend VANESSA sit on a picnic table in Vanessa's backyard while he strums on his guitar, not paying attention to her. After a few moments of watching him play, Vanessa finally speaks up to get his attention away from his guitar, and focus on her.

VANESSA

Who do you love more, me or

You're guitar?

DUDEMAN

(without looking at her)

It's a perfectly rational

question and I expect a

perfectly rational answer.

VANESSA

(with attitude)

It's a perfectly rational

question and I expect a

perfectly rational answer

Dudeman pauses for a moment before answering calmly.

DUDEMAN

I love you both, in different

ways

VANESSA

I get jealous of you're guitar

you know.

DUDEMAN

Oh really.

VANESSA

Yes really.

DUDEMAN

Jealousy is a very intense and

often misunderstood emotion.

Why prêt ell do you feel

jealous of her?

VANESSA

Well that's one reason!

You refer to it as "her!"

It's no reason to get upset

DUDEMAN

A lot of guys refer to their

favorite possession as "her."

It's no reason to get upset!

VANESSA

Well you pay more attention to

Her than you do to me!

You're always playing with

"her."

When I'm here, when I'm

not here, when we're on the

phone!

You're always playing with that

stupid thing!

DUDEMAN

Now there's no reason for name

calling!

VANESSA

I think you honestly love your

guitar more than you love me.

Dudeman finally turns his head and looks at her.

DUDEMAN

Do you want me to quit?

VANESSA

No.

DUDEMAN

Good.

Cos I wouldn't.

VANESSA

Even if I ask you to?

DUDEMAN

You'd never do that.

DUDEMAN

What if I did?

DUDEMAN

You'd be disappointed.

I could never quit.

I'm addicted.

It would be like if I tried

to quit eating, or sleeping,

or breathing.

I can't help it.

It's internal

VANESSA

You're such a weirdo

DUDEMAN

Maybe that's why I like my

guitar better than you.

She never insults me!

VANESSA

Ah ha!

So you admit it!

DUDEMAN

Admit what?

VANESSA

You actually hold a higher

regard for a piece of wood

than you do for me!

DUDEMAN

Would you listen to yourself!

Can you actually hear what

you're saying?

VANESSA

I can barely hear myself

think with you banging on

that thing!

DUDEMAN

I do not bang on it!

You're crazy!

VANESSA

I'm crazy?

I'm crazy!

You may more attention to a

piece of wood than you do your

own girlfriend!

DUDEMAN

I'm not talking about this

anymore

VANESSA

Just talk to your piece of

wood.

DUDEMAN

It's a language you'll never

understand, baby.

VANESSA

Well, maybe I don't want to

understand it.

DUDEMAN

Are you on Prozac?

VANESSA

No.

DUDEMAN

Well you should be!

Vanessa gets up quickly and rushes away from the picnic table.

DUDEMAN

Where the hell do ya think

you're going?

Vanessa stops and sharply turns around towards Dudeman.

She points at him and speaks.

VANESSA

Do you know what your problem

Is Dudeman?

You're so intelligent, you

think you're smart!
